Functionally it works by interfering with an enzyme called protease which is the requirement of HIV infected cells to make new viruses. This stops the production of new viruses by giving raise to the new fresh cells to develop. Ritonavir is usually available with the combination of Lopinavir as a fixed dose as it improves the activity against HIV.
